  • Veteran Records Finder is an independent volunteer project, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Archives and Records Administration, or the Department of Defense.
  • Reports are research summaries, not official records. They may contain errors from old documents, machine reading (OCR), or matching to the wrong person. They can't be used for benefits, medals, burial honors or legal purposes.
  • Official copies of service records are free from the National Personnel Records Center using Standard Form 180.
  • Sections marked Likely describe what someone in a job, ship or unit typically did. They are labeled guesses, not facts about the individual.
  • The service is a personal project, not a product or service of any bank or business.

Using the service

  • Free at launch, with daily limits per email address and per connection. We may pause the service at any time.
  • Only search for a living person if it's you or you have their permission.
  • Don't enter Social Security numbers or anyone's private information beyond what's needed for the search.
  • No automated or bulk requests.

Content & credits

Records come from public archives. Photos are public-domain images from Wikimedia Commons and are credited on each page. Some histories are adapted from Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0 and are linked. Find a Grave and similar sites are linked, never copied.
